Makar Sankrati

One of the famous & great festival in Indian culture.

It has it's own identity as Uttarayan starts from this day & Surya (sun) become more powerful than som (moon) So from Makar Sankranti gradually day become bigger than night. 

Consumption of sesame (Til) with jaggery gives lot of heat nutrition energy which protect us in cold days of winter. Ushna & Snigdh gun of sesame & Jaggery prevent our skin from cold & dryness. Makar Sankranti also have tradition to greet people,elders, close ones to give blessings & give them Til-gul as a symbol or medium for good health ( physically & mentally ).Which shows great Indian culture of nourishing physical health by good food & Mental health by showing gratitude towards society.

In Ayurveda point of view sesame (til) is known as potential drug to reduce vata dosha. Snigdh ,ushna gun of Sesame(til)  make best drug on vata vikara (Disorders due to vata) like joint pain , degeneration of joint, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, lumber spondylosis, cervical spondylosis etc.

One can use sesame in diffract manner like use of sesame oil (Til tailm), used in medicine in different ancient ayurvedic preparations like Gandhtailam, bala tilam etc.

Also used in many ayurvedic panchkarma procedures like Snehan, shirodhara, Basti, Nasya, Abhyang etc.

These all properties really  makes sesame (Til) very powerful entity in day to day life which may be forgotten by us in recent days.

If we think in that manner the holy auspicius occasion of Makar sankranti is a really good day to remember our ancient traditional practice of using those miracle forming drugs like sesame (Til) .

One thing is for sure, this little looking sesame has a lot of nutrients. That is why we have been using sesame and sesame oil for thousands of years.

In Modern point of view 

Sesame has calcium, we all know that. It also contains manganese, iron, phosphorus, selenium, group B vitamins and fiber. Calcium in sesame is good for bones, and sesame is high in zinc, which helps prevent bone fragility. In short, it can be of great benefit to women. Sesame seeds are very useful for those who are deficient in calcium or are prone to increased bone fragility due to menopause.

The iron and copper in sesame help in the absorption of iron in the body, useful in disorders like rheumatism. Due to this property, patients with rheumatism may feel better after massaging with sesame oil.
